The Travelling Tortoise

We are an off-the-grid eco retreat situated only 10km from the charming hamlet of De Rust in the Western Cape. The resort is set in natural Klein Karoo veldt with expansive and awe-inspiring views from the decks of our mountain chalets. The pastoral green Middelplaas valley lies in front, the captivating Red Stone Hills to the right, and the inspiring Swartberg behind. So weary traveller, visit us and do as the tortoise does – wind down slowly. 

We are pet friendly!

One of two generous-sized swimming pools – a must in the hot Karoo sun – is adjacent to the camp site at the bottom of the hill.

New additions to our facilities are two eco-friendly woodfired hot tubs. Each sits privately tucked away in the bush and are exclusive to The Angulate and The Hinge-back chalets. Perfect for cold winter nights while stargazing with a glass of wine. Also, if you don’t light the fire you have a cool private splash pool for the hot summers.

We’ve recently installed a heated swimming pool near the main chalets. The pool’s elevation allows for uninterrupted panoramic views of the valley and mountains, right from the water. A 10m bank of solar panels heat the pool for year-round swimming.

A short family hike meanders up the mountain. And apart from our many varieties of tortoise there are frequent sightings of his arch rival, the hare. Small shy game can also be seen. The bush is untouched and boasts the fascinating and colourful fynbos, cacti and succulents – which also attracts many colourful birds. 

We’ve also just finished installing an ‘adventure playground’, where the Silver Hare speeds down a zip line towards the valley.
